The New Vista Society Today
New Vista’s flagship facility is its Care Home, a 236-bed four-storey building which opened in 1975 and underwent a comprehensive refurbishing in 1993. Since 2000, informing New Vista’s services to residents – many with special needs – has been the Eden Alternative, “a philosophy that believes that loneliness, boredom and helplessness account for most of the suffering of residents in long-term care facilities.” According to the Society’s website, New Vista “is committed to fighting these plagues and providing a creative and fun habitat for its residents by promoting friendships, meaningful activities and independence. The Eden Alternative uses plants, animals and visits from children whenever possible.”
Along with its residential New Vista Care Home, the Society runs the Cranberry Cottage adult day program which offers programs of recreation and exercise for seniors, along with diverse opportunities for social engagement with peers, professional staff, and volunteers. Community outreach is an important element of the Society’s programming activities.
